Administrative Guidelines for Exempt Positions

Exempt Position Minimum Pay

Purdue is subject to and manages its compensation program in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). For more information on the FLSA, please see page 23.

To maintain compliance with the FLSA while still meeting the needs of the University, the following administrative guideline must be followed for all exempt positions.

  1. Full-time employees (30+ hours per week) in a job that has been classified as exempt under the FLSA must make at least the FLSA minimum earning threshold*.
  2. Part-time employees (29 hours or less per week) in a job that has been classified as exempt under the FLSA may be paid less than the minimum earnings threshold – if this occurs:
    • They will need to be moved into a professional non-exempt job
    • They will need to track their time and be paid on an hourly basis
    • They will be eligible for overtime pay
    • They will continue to be considered exempt for purposes of benefits and other programs

* The current FLSA minimum earning threshold is $684 a week ($35,568 for a fiscal year)
