Free flu shots returning to all Purdue campuses for 2019

Who needs the flu vaccine? The answer is YOU.

Once again, benefits-eligible faculty and staff – as well as dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan -- will have on-campus access to their free flu vaccines for 2019 on all three Purdue campuses.

Via a multi-facility collaboration – the Center for Healthy Living, Purdue Pharmacy and the Nursing Center for Family Health -- all on Purdue’s West Lafayette Campus -- will be providing flu shots; additionally on-campus flu shot events will be held throughout campus beginning Oct. 9.

Flu shot events begin for Purdue Northwest (Hammond and Westville campuses) on Oct. 9 and Purdue Fort Wayne starts their flu shot events on Oct. 10.

“One of our biggest successes to date in engaging faculty and staff in their health and wellness has been our flu shot campaign,” said Candace Shaffer, director of benefits in human resources. “Each year we see more and more members of our Purdue community embracing the flu shot events and locations where flu shots are available. Having free flu vaccines available and convenient for our Purdue family at multiple locations as well as at several flu shot events around the West Lafayette campus as well as the regional campuses helps us help our co-workers protect themselves and the people around them from the flu. Another neat thing about the flu shot campaigns is that they played a role in the university being recognized as a 5 Star AchieveWELL company for 2019 by the Wellness Council of Indiana.”

Flu shot locations

Flu shots will be available at the following West Lafayette campus locations.

*The Center for Healthy Living and the Nursing Center for Family Health will be administering the Fluzone Quadrivalent vaccine which is designed to protect against four different flu viruses; two influenza A viruses and two influenza B viruses and is approved for anyone ages 6 months and older. Additionally, the Flublok Quadrivalent vaccine – which is egg free and is approved for use in people 18 years and older – will be available at both locations. The Purdue Pharmacy will be administering the Afluria Quadrivalent (pre-filled syringe) vaccine, which is preservative free and latex free.

On-campus flu shot events

The West Lafayette campus is offering flu shot events for faculty and staff (and dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan) and retirees. Note: Pediatric patients can receive their flu shots at the Center for Healthy Living. Pediatric flu shot details also can be found via the link above.

Additional options

• Retail pharmacies: Most pharmacies can administer flu shots. Check with your pharmacy for availability.
• Health Care Provider: In most cases, your primary care provider can administer flu shots.

Remember, regardless of where you receive your flu shot, all Purdue medical plans cover the seasonal flu vaccine at 100 percent for employees and covered dependents.
