WLFI – Purdue Student Farm Making Produce Available to the Public

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – After one of the most productive years at the Purdue Student Farm, produce is being made available for purchase to the public.

Each week, customers will be able to pick up a box of seasonal vegetables grown on the farm.

They will include produce such as kale, tomatoes, onions, peppers and herbs.

Each box costs $25. Currently, the farm is only accepting cash and checks.

According to Farm Manager Chris Adair, the farm has not sold to the public for several years.

He said they are now able to because of decreased demand from on-campus dining due to COVID-19.

“It’s always a little more connecting to be able to actually sell direct to the community and talk to the community,” said Adair.

Pickup will take place on the farm at 1491 Cherry Lane from 4-6 pm each Friday, starting this week.

Adair said those wishing to purchase a box will need to pre-order through the Hoosier Food Market website.

“We will be making sales so we kind of have to balance how much stuff we available for the boxes, how much we have available to sell and we are still donating produce at the same time,” said Adair.

In addition to selling the produce to Purdue, the Student Farm donates a portion of their produce to food banks across Greater Lafayette.
