These operating procedures support the policy on Equal Opportunity and Equal Access (III.C.2).
Effective Date: June 30, 2025
Purdue University complies with Indiana state law regarding participation on athletic teams by designating its teams as being either men’s, women’s or mixed. In accordance with that law, “a male, based on . . . biological sex at birth in accordance with the student’s genetics and reproductive biology,” may not participate on an athletic team designated as women’s.
Athletic teams covered by these procedures are those that are organized, sanctioned or sponsored by Purdue University in which the participating students compete against students on an athletic team or in a sport organized, sanctioned or sponsored by another postsecondary educational institution. This includes intercollegiate/varsity sports and may include club sports whose participants play against students from other colleges or universities.
Directors of Athletics on each campus and directors of recreational/fitness centers on each campus will ensure that any teams/sports that meet the definition of an athletic team under their authority have accurate designations and otherwise follow these procedures.
Written complaints by students or their parents may be directed to the University. The written complaint must be filed in a timely manner and be addressed to the Vice President for Ethics and Compliance. The Vice President for Ethics and Compliance, or designee, will provide a copy of the complaint to the sponsor of the athletic team within 10 days of receipt and afford the sponsor an opportunity to provide a written response.
The Vice President for Ethics and Compliance, or their designee, will review complaints and communicate with the complainant and sponsor regarding their determination, including any appropriate remedies or sanctions.
