NEW RESOURCES:  Volunteer Safety & Management

A big challenge for emergency managers is ensuring the safety of volunteers assisting with cleanup in the aftermath of a storm event. Unfortunately, more people can be hurt in the aftermath of a tornado or windstorm than during the actual event. These resources can be used by Extension Educators and community organizations to organize and train youth or adult volunteers, increasing the safety and effectiveness of their efforts.

Tailgate Safety Training: Volunteer Safety During Tornado and High Wind Damage Cleanup: Lesson Plan and outline for 10-15 minute safety briefing for volunteers.

Flooded with Volunteers: Produced by University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, this publication is a guide for managing youth and adult volunteers during disaster recovery.

PREPclips logo - mobile phone

PREPclips are short videos that highlight emergency preparedness and response topics.  These PREPclips may be shared on social media or used for educational programs.  The clips below are particularly relevant to responding to tornado or high wind events.  Other PREPclips can be found here:  https://www.purdue.edu/engineering/ABE/INPREPared/prepclips/

PREPnotes logo

PREPnotes are short (about one page) about a disaster and emergency preparation and response.  These PREPnotes download as a Microsoft Word file so educators, media, and others can easily edit and modify the documents.  The PREPnotes below were selected because they are appropriate for tornado/high wind event response and recovery.  Many other PREPnotes can be found at: https://www.purdue.edu/engineering/ABE/INPREPared/prepnotes/
