As the pandemic made an ever-increasing global impact, these measures eventually affected schools and workplaces, and teachers and administrators were faced with the reality of needing to conduct lessons and meetings over virtual platforms. At the time, we had no idea how long these circumstances would last. Two years later, we can now reflect on how far we’ve come. A significant part of the pandemic response took place on university campuses and Purdue University soon emerged as a shining example of how to safely re-open for in-person instruction in part because of the pivotal role played by the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.

Students in an agricultural and biological engineering class said they named a bacteriophage they discovered after Purdue President Mitch Daniels. Bacteriophages are a type of virus that destroys bacteria cells by infecting them and reproducing inside them. Bacteriophages can help treat bacterial infections in humans that have become resistant to antibiotics, according to a Purdue press release.

On April 27, the College of Agriculture honored students during the annual Spring Awards Banquet. The in-person event was a collaborative effort between the Purdue Agricultural Council and the Office of Academic Programs. Karen Plaut, the Glenn W. Sample Dean of Agriculture, addressed the nominees. “Celebrating our outstanding students highlights their range of accomplishments from campus and community leadership to academic excellence,” said Karen Plaut, the Glenn W. Sample Dean of Agriculture. “We are proud of all of our award nominees this year and look forward to the great things they will accomplish in the future.”

Purdue University’s Equine Sports Medicine Center has received a $US3 million gift from a former student that will be used for equine health research and to continue the Indiana center’s groundbreaking work. Purdue’s facility will now be named the Donald J. McCrosky Equine Sports Medicine Center. It was dedicated on April 8.

Several facilities and programs on the Purdue University campus in West Lafayette will see a name change, following Friday’s action by the school’s board of trustees. The board approved renaming the Honors College and the equine medical center in honor of alumni who donated to the university, while also greenlighting a hypersonics research laboratory.

Six students from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) recently visited the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine for “Purdue LIVE”, a program in which students solved cases through the use of laboratory and other specialized methods. “LIVE” stands for “Laboratory Investigative Veterinary Experience.” The STEM learning opportunities were led by Dr. Kenitra Hendrix, director of the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and a team of PVM researchers and ADDL diagnosticians.
