Women’s Global Health Institute annual symposium to focus on COVID-19

The Women’s Global Health Institute annual symposium will focus on women’s health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The virtual symposium will take place from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday (Nov. 13). It is free and open to Purdue staff, students and faculty and the general public.

Online registration and the symposium program are available at www.purdue.edu/dp/wghi. The link to access the virtual event will be sent to all registered participants approximately two days before the event.

The symposium will feature two keynote speakers. Sabra Klein is a professor of molecular microbiology and immunology and co-director of the Center for Women’s Health, Sex, and Gender Research at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Klein will discuss sex and gender diff­erences in the pathogenesis of COVID-19.

Richard Kuhn, the Trent and Judith Anderson Distinguished Professor in Biological Sciences, and the Krenicki Family Director of the Purdue Institute of Inflammation, Immunology and Infectious Disease, also will serve as a keynote speaker. Kuhn leads Purdue's Coronavirus Research Task Force working to understand, prevent, treat and overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, four professors from Purdue and Indiana University School of Medicine will present their research on early detection and women's health in the current pandemic:

Craig Goergen, Biomedical Engineering, Purdue -- “Early Detection of COVID-19 by Monitoring Resting Heart Rate and Respiration Rate Using Wearable Devices.”

Dr. Gregory M. Sokol, Clinical Pediatrics, IU School of Medicine -- "The Impact of COVID-19 on Childbirth and the Newborn."

Zoe Taylor, Human Development and Family Studies, Purdue -- “Challenges, Well-being, and Coping of Single Mothers During the COVID-19 Pandemic.”

Xiang Zhou, Educational Studies, Purdue -- “Maternal and Paternal Response Comparison at the Beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic.”
