Across the life sciences, engineering, and computational disciplines, we are witnessing a rapid transformation in the tools and models available to accelerate discovery and translation. Advances in organoids, lab-on-a-chip systems, digital twins, and AI-driven computational models, that when integrated with traditional in-vivo approaches, are redefining how we evaluate medical devices and therapeutics before they reach patients. Together, these in-vivo, in-vitro, and in-silico innovations hold the promise to improve predictive accuracy, reduce costs and reliance on animal models, and ultimately shorten the path from laboratory discovery to clinical care.
This is the essence of One Health: a recognition that human health is intertwined with innovations that span biological, technological, and environmental domains. By leveraging Purdue’s One Health Initiative, we encourage investigators to bring forward bold new ideas that can improve the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of translational science. Interdisciplinary collaboration that links biomedical engineers, life scientists, clinicians, computer scientists, and environmental health researchers is central to realizing this vision. To support this work, the Indiana CTSI Project Development Teams (PDT) Program provides pilot funding (up to $15,000) to help innovators generate the preliminary data necessary to strengthen competitiveness for extramural funding. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and investigators are invited to meet with the PDT Committee to discuss their project and receive constructive feedback.
When preparing your application (3 pages is typical), we recommend:
Include a short paragraph on the Translational Impact of your project—how it will ultimately advance human health within a One Health framework.
Outline your External Funding Strategy—where this work leads next, including partnerships and how you will compete for larger extramural grants. Letters of support from collaborators or industry partners can be very helpful.
Provide a detailed, well-justified budget.
More information about the PDT program can be found here: PDT Program Details.
If your research is pushing the boundaries of preclinical innovation, now is the time to leverage Purdue’s One Health momentum. We invite you to apply and accelerate your path to impact.
