Announcement to Faculty and Students for Summer and Fall 2018 DURI Program

April 6, 2018

This semester, Discovery Park has begun to extend and transform the DURI program, by identifying problems in the key strategic areas of DP (Global Security, Health, and Sustainability), requiring collaboration between 2 to 5 undergraduate students, faculty, and distinct academic disciplines. The program has small teams of undergraduate students and mentors work together on a consistent basis to produce research more impactful than individual students can achieve on their own, and to provide a basis for further collaboration among faculty in pursuing ambitious projects with potential to solve major challenges at a global scale.

The DURI program this summer will run for 40 hours per week for ten weeks (approximately May 21-July 20). Anticipated timelines are as follows:

  • March 20 – April 13, 2018: Student applications open

  • April 20, 2018: Faculty selections of students completed

Summer project supervisors should meet with their selected interns to 1) develop a research schedule with approximately 10 hours per week (minimum 100 hours total) and 2) outline research project expectations.

Purdue University-West Lafayette faculty interested in organizing a Fall 2018 project should submit a project proposal via.https://www.purdue.edu/undergrad-research/ourconnect/public/duri/. The submission deadline for Fall 2018 projects will be July 20, 2018.  The review committee will evaluate the proposals and select the final projects by July 30, 2018. Students may submit applications for up to three projects from August 1 – August 20.  All eligible student applications will be forwarded to faculty project supervisors for review and final selection, which are due by Monday, August 27.  Each participating student will earn a $1000 fall fellowship, with DURI contributing the full amount (no faculty cost-sharing required).

In the meantime, faculty with any questions about the program should contact Peter Bermel at pbermel@purdue.edu. Students with any questions about the program can contact Heather Anthrop via hanthrop@purdue.edu. Thank you very much in advance for your interest!
