Purdue University in Indianapolis
Copy Guide

Updated: 3/18/26

BOILERPLATE COPY

The university boilerplate for both Indianapolis and West Lafayette can be found here.

CAMPUS/LOCATION

Purdue University is the preferred way to refer to both Indianapolis and West Lafayette. We are working to establish the understanding that Indianapolis and West Lafayette are equally Purdue. Purdue in Indianapolis is not a regional campus. Our copy should be clear in that regard. When it is necessary to distinguish between Indianapolis and West Lafayette, please follow this guidance:

  • The word “location” should be used instead of “campus.”
  • The word “campus” should not be used in a way that creates separation between Indianapolis and West Lafayette. Both are Purdue University.
  • The word “campus” may be used in certain contexts, including describing the student experience or when providing necessary details (on-campus housing).
  • Please also see the “expansion” entry below.

Examples of correct use of “location”:

  • Our Indianapolis location expands Purdue’s mission and impact with a first-of-its-kind Hard Tech Corridor.
  • The One Purdue model promotes academic unity and leverages the strengths of both locations to create a richer, more flexible learning environment.
  • The Data Mine has been seamlessly integrated from West Lafayette into the Indianapolis location.

Examples of correct use of “campus”:

  • While you are on campus, be sure to pick up some Purdue gear at the Team Store.
  • A campus visit is a great way to determine if Purdue is the right fit for you.
  • North Hall provides on-campus housing for Purdue students in Indianapolis.

DANIELS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Our Indianapolis location includes Daniels School of Business majors. Daniels School of Business has its own brand localization. Communications pertaining to Daniels School in Indianapolis should use brand language that is common to both, such as: future-ready leaders, real-world learning, STEM-infused programs, innovative majors and tackling today’s toughest challenges.

In news releases, Mitch Daniels School of Business should be used on first reference; Daniels School is acceptable on second reference. For marketing projects, Daniels School of Business is acceptable on first reference; Daniels School is acceptable on second reference. Do not use DSB.

EMAIL SIGNATURE

Please see the “faculty, staff, students and programs” entry and the “logo” entry for email signature guidance.

EXPANSION

Purdue University is the preferred way to refer to both Indianapolis and West Lafayette. When it is necessary to distinguish between the two, the word “expansion” can be used. The word “expansion” replaces the word “extension,” which was used previously.

Example of correct use:

  • Our expansion to Indianapolis prepares career-ready students for the jobs of tomorrow.
  • Purdue University in Indianapolis is a fully integrated expansion of West Lafayette, extending to central Indiana the academic rigor and accessible excellence for which Purdue is known.
  • It was a transformative inaugural year for Purdue’s expansion in the capital city.

FACULTY, STAFF, STUDENTS AND PROGRAMS

When referring to faculty, staff, students or programs in Indianapolis, do not use “Purdue University in Indianapolis” as a descriptor. Instead, use this construction:

Purdue [department] professor in Indianapolis

Purdue [major] student in Indianapolis

Purdue [program name] in Indianapolis

This construction emphasizes that Indianapolis is an expansion of the West Lafayette campus, not a regional campus. Do NOT use “Purdue University in Indianapolis faculty,” “Purdue University in Indianapolis program,” etc.

Examples of correct usage:

  • Christian Rogers, a Purdue computer graphics technology associate professor in Indianapolis, says that having smaller class sizes allows him to forge close relationships with students.
  • Nikhil Anand Dhoka is excelling as a Purdue computer science student in Indianapolis.
  • Sarah Papabathini, a Purdue AI student in Indianapolis, takes advantage of all the city and university have to offer.
  • See what your schedule would look like as a Purdue computer engineering student in Indianapolis! Boilermaker Brian Cheong is walking us through a day in his life.
