New symposium to delve into the latest in spectroscopy, photonics

Purdue's first Symposium on Applied Spectroscopy and Photonics, scheduled for Sept. 16, will offer widely known speakers and cutting-edge research ideas from poster sessions.

In a TED-like format, the event, which is organized by the new Purdue University chapter of Society for Applied Spectroscopy, will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Wilmeth Active Learning Center.

Registration is free, but it is needed by Sept. 9 to receive a free lunch. Abstracts for poster presentations must be submitted by the same date to appear in the program booklet. Go to the symposium website to learn more. The chapter, also known as PUCSAS, intends to make the symposium an annual event.

Among the topics will be techniques such as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), Raman spectroscopy, single photon spectroscopy, biophotonics, fluoroscence, laser spectroscopy, astronomy, and laser machining.

Scheduled featured speakers and their topics are:

* Roger Wiens, Los Alamos National Laboratory, "Exploring Mars with Curiosity and Laser Spectroscopy."
* Suvrath Mahadevan, Astronomy and Astrophysics, Penn State, "Next-Gen Planet Hunter."
* Ji-Xin Cheng, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Boston University, "Revisiting the 'Little Animals' Under a Chemical Microscope."

* Sebastian Wachsmann-Hogiu, Department of Bioengineering, McGill University, TBA.
* Gabriel Popsecu, Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois, TBA.
* Christopher Goldenstein, Mechanical Engineering, Purdue, "Laser-Absorption Sensors for Characterizing Practical Combustors."

* Yung C Shin, Mechanical Engineering, Purdue, "Ultrafast Laser Induced Plasmas: Modeling, Measurement and Its Implication."
* Masanobu Yamamoto, Basic Medical Sciences, Purdue, and Miftek Corp., "Laser Induced Photon Spectroscopy (LIPS) by Differential Geiger-mode Silicon Photomultiplier."
* Yulia Pushkar, Physics and Astronomy, Purdue, TBA.

The symposium is supported the Department of Nuclear Engineering, Society for Applied Spectroscopy and Student Organization Grant Allocation Board, as well as other funds. Corporate support is provided by Opotek Inc, Applied Spectra, Continuum and Amplitude Technologies.
