New Course Insights system provides access to archived syllabi

Faculty have a new platform for sharing information about the courses they teach. Course Insights is a new, easy-to-use syllabus archiving system where students and advisors can conveniently view course syllabi from previous semesters.  Developed in response to a request from Purdue Student Government, the latest addition to myPurdue makes it easy for faculty to make their syllabi available to the University community.

"Displaying archived syllabi via myPurdue along with course materials information, provides students with relevant information to use as they build their course schedules," says Frank Dooley, vice provost for teaching and learning.

According to Sandra Monroe, director of university undergraduate advising, the system is also a resource for academic advisors.

"Course Insights has the potential to provide students and academic advisors with a whole new level of detailed information to reference in conversations about course selections and academic planning," Monroe says. "Being able to review a recent course syllabus gives students and advisors more of an idea about the course content, course delivery methods and the faculty member's expectations. Comprehensive course information will enable students to make more informed decisions."

Advisors, faculty and students can access the system by following the Course Insights Syllabus Archives link in the Course Catalog Resources section of myPurdue. Faculty are able to upload syllabi for their courses with a few key strokes.  Departmental designees are able to manage syllabi for all of the courses within their department.

Course Insights was released to academic departments in June.  It was made available to students on Oct. 3.  To date, the archives house 2,378 syllabi for 944 courses across 36 academic disciplines. The system was created by ITaP's Student Systems Competency Center with assistance from the Office of the Registrar. Anyone with a valid Purdue career account can access the archives.
