Education program for Risk Management Employment Claims Initiative now available

March 6, 2014

Risk Management, in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President for Ethics and Compliance and with Human Resources, is announcing the availability of the Risk Management Employment Claims Initiative education program. Participation in this program helps units meet the criteria for the new insurance deductible reduction offered by Risk Management announced on July 1, 2013, in a Purdue Today article.

The program supports employees and supervisors in understanding employment-related issues such as the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and other University leave policies, overtime rates, discrimination, harassment, and disability awareness and accommodations. Participants will complete the following four training modules and corresponding certification quizzes:

* Equal Opportunity.
* Americans with Disabilities Act.
* Wage and Hour Issues for Employees and Supervisors.
* Family and Medical Leave Act and University Leave Policies.

The training modules and instructions for accessing the certification quizzes are located on the Risk Management Employment Claims Initiative website. Each training module is approximately 20 to 25 minutes long. The education program also includes participation in new employee orientation and new supervisor orientation offered through HR.

In order to obtain the insurance deductible reduction, each college or organizational unit (i.e., each vice president or dean) will sign a letter of intent committing their college or organization to participate in the education program at the rates detailed on the Risk Management Rates and Deductibles website. The dates for achieving training targets, referred to as the implementation period, will be established through the letter of intent.

Additionally, units must engage HR in employment-related decisions before actions are taken in order to obtain the insurance deductible reduction. This component is referred to as good-faith due diligence.

Questions about the insurance deductible reduction may be directed to Tiffany Utermark, claims and special projects administrator in Risk Management, at 49-46134 or tutermark@purdue.edu.

Questions about the Risk Management Employment Claims Initiative education program may be directed to Nicole Weibel, education coordinator in the Office of the Vice President for Ethics and Compliance, at 49-63201 or vpeceducation@purdue.edu.
