HIPAA Training

Purdue University Staff Training

Covered Components at Purdue University are responsible for providing comprehensive training regarding its privacy policies and procedures as necessary to carry out their functions. Each covered component is required to ensure that all staff members, including new and existing employees, volunteers, trainees or others whose conduct is under the control of the entity, are properly trained for their particular job responsibilities. This training is required annually. Generally, the covered component's HIPAA liaison is responsible for facilitating this training.

The HIPAA Liaisons are the first point of contact regarding HIPAA Compliance questions and procedures for each of the listed covered entities (see Liaison Expectations). The Office of Legal Counsel may be contacted for general HIPAA questions and issues regarding HIPAA compliance at Purdue University.

Each staff member should review the HIPAA Training Presentation prior to completeing the annual training. This presentation provides information on the basic HIPAA concepts and regulations governing confidentiality of personally identifiable health information.

It is also recommended that all staff read the following Notice of Privacy Practices as appropriate for the area in which they work.  Additionally, staff members should review the HIPAA Communication Guidelines for more information regarding the proper handling of protected health information (PHI).

Please note that if you or your staff do not have a career account, a confidentiality agreement must be completed AFTER the above referenced materials have been reviewed.  Your HIPAA Liaison is responsible for maintaining these agreements.

Any questions regarding your department's training requirements, please contact your HIPAA Liaison or Hannah Carroll-Altman, Associate Legal Counsel, Public Safety and Security.
