President Daniels to moderate discussion with former Sens. Bayh, Lieberman on civil democracy

Former U.S. Sens. Evan Bayh and Joe Lieberman will join President Mitch Daniels on Tuesday (March 3) for an armchair discussion titled “Beyond Labels: Addressing the Grand Challenge of Democracy Together.” The event is part of Purdue’s “Democracy, Civility, and Freedom of Expression” series aimed at engaging people on important societal topics.

Digital technology use and digital inequality could complicate teens’ lives

Adolescents are avid users of smartphones and social media. And with that use come concerns that constant connectivity is leading to bad academic performance, disconnection from life offline and heightened psychological distress. But a new study shows that having a smartphone and social media accounts is not reliably or strongly linked to adolescents’ math and reading test scores, school belonging, psychological distress, conduct problems or physical health. However, many adolescents, especially those from lower socio-economic backgrounds, are reporting technology-related problems.

Purdue University Global commencement to use virtual reality component

While some 400 Purdue University Global graduates take part in commencement ceremonies in-person today (Feb. 27) in Los Angeles, an additional 75-plus are planning to participate virtually, thanks to a first-of-its-kind pilot program involving innovative technology developed at Purdue. Purdue Global officials worked with ITaP’s Research Computing Envision Center for their vision for a virtual reality commencement ceremony.

Travelers planning an affordable spring break trip should be aware of the “Airbnb effect.” Areas with a rise in Airbnb rentals, for example, often see a jump in housing prices and other negative aspects of tourism, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Professor Mohammad Rahman, who has studied and written about the home-sharing platform, said the problem goes far beyond housing prices.
