In the technology-driven world that kids live in today, it’s no surprise that there is much talk about screen time in regard to kids and teens. To address the concern and add to the ongoing discussions, Human Resources – Benefits is offering a Healthy Boiler workshop on March 3 titled “Kids and Technology,” which supports the work-life integration pillar of the Healthy Boiler Program.

Amber Noll, extension educator with Purdue Health and Human Sciences, who is leading the workshop, said, “Many individuals spend over 10 hours a day in front of a screen, and our kids are clocking in at an average of six hours or more a day.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also reports high levels of screen time use by children, which by default reduces the amount of physical activity a child is engaging in throughout the day. The CDC recommends that kids get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. The CDC’s “Screen Time vs. Lean Time” infographic shares details on how much time kids spend in front of a screen as well as tips for parents.

During the workshop, Noll will share information relative to the ongoing debate about screen time and children, including why screen time should be limited for developing minds and strategies on how to manage technology in young people’s lives.

“Kids and Technology” will take place from noon to 1 p.m. March 3 in Purdue Memorial Union, Room 263AB. Those interested in attending should register by March 2 via the Healthy Boiler Portal. Registration link can be found under the “Engage” tab, “Wellness Events” on the portal’s homepage. Healthy Boiler workshops are free to all benefits-eligible faculty and staff and dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan.
