NASA astronaut Ellen Ochoa talks worldwide teamwork and discovery

Purdue isn’t really a place where a visiting astronaut would have a spotty audience. True to Boilermaker spirit, Ellen Ochoa — the first Hispanic woman in space and former director of Johnson Space Center — gave her talk on Sept. 26 to a packed Purdue Memorial Union ballroom. Ochoa’s presentation, “What IF We Led an International Space Collaboration?,” was an Ideas Festival event marking Purdue’s 150th anniversary celebration.

Teflon pan

Scientist working to remove chemicals from drinking water

Anyone who has enjoyed the ease of sliding a fried egg out of a Teflon-coated frying pan or watched rain water bead on a jacket can thank per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). For all the good they do, however, this wide range of uses leads to people regularly ingesting these chemicals. A Purdue scientist believes the key to lowering PFAS levels in drinking water is to reduce their use and to capture or remediate them before they leave wastewater treatment plants.
