Sandel named AVP for Sponsored Program Services

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Karen Plaut, executive vice president of research, has appointed Ken Sandel as associate vice president for sponsored program services (SPS) effective July 1.  He will also continue to hold the title of senior intellectual property officer for Purdue.

“Ken and his team have been instrumental in enabling Purdue researchers to drive innovation,” Plaut said. “Now, at a time of significant growth and opportunity in the Purdue research enterprise, Ken’s vision and leadership will be vital to supporting research faculty and staff excel and to achieving overall research excellence at Purdue.”

Sandel joined Purdue in 1988 and has held management and leadership roles in finance, capital planning and the Office of Research. Since July 2014, he has led the SPS organization which, during his tenure, has processed $17 billion in proposals, managed over $4.2 billion in awards and secured more than 40 new strategic partnerships with industry under newly developed intellectual property models.

In addition to maintaining his current responsibilities, as associate vice president, Sandel will lead an expanded SPS organization, which includes decision support and oversight of both Purdue and Purdue Applied Research Institute (PARI) grants and awards and will play an instrumental role in the scale up and rollout of Purdue’s next-generation electronic research administration system.
