Remember to practice proper recycling procedures
All members of the campus community are encouraged to follow Purdue University’s recycling practices to ensure proper waste management. The university offers a comprehensive waste diversion program to reduce the environmental impact of waste.
Here’s a quick refresher on what is accepted in campus recycling:
- Mixed Paper: Office paper, newspaper, flyers and notebook paper are acceptable. If it tears and reveals fibers, without any plastic-like film, it’s recyclable. Please note that shredded paper is not acceptable in normal recycling; it is considered a contaminant. It should be placed exclusively in the green, mixed paper carts. Paper that needs to be shredded should be placed in the blue confidential carts to be sent off for shredding services.
- Cardboard: Flattened cardboard boxes are acceptable. Parts of pizza boxes that have food or grease should be removed and placed in the landfill bin.
- Plastic Bottles, Jugs and Jars: Only empty plastic bottles, jugs and jars are acceptable. No other plastic items are accepted at this time.
- Aluminum and Steel Cans: Make sure they are empty before recycling.
Please remember to keep the following items out of recycling bins to avoid contamination:
Food Waste and Food Containers: Any leftover food, dirty containers or plastic bags
Soft and multi-layer plastics: Chip bags, candy bar wrappers, plastic wraps, etc.
Cups: Paper and plastic cups, including Styrofoam, should not be recycled.
