New Hazardous Materials Lab Recognition Program highlights safe and supportive lab practices
Purdue Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) has launched a new initiative to recognize research labs that go above and beyond in promoting a safe, compliant and respectful working environment — the Hazardous Materials Lab Recognition Program. The program shines a spotlight on labs that demonstrate outstanding practices in hazardous materials management and contribute to a more efficient and mutually beneficial working relationship with EHS staff.
While compliance is always critical, what truly sets labs apart are the extra efforts — such as keeping spaces tidy, making waste easily accessible and having open lines of communication with EHS staff.
“One of the key things we look for is whether labs consistently submit their waste properly according to our guidelines,” said Justin Daisey, an environmental technician with EHS. “This helps Purdue stay compliant with EPA regulations and ensures smooth operations.”
The inaugural recipients of the Hazardous Materials Lab Recognition Award from the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters include:
- Dr. Altman’s Labs (Pharmacy Building, Third Floor)
A busy and dynamic research space, Dr. Altman’s labs stood out for their welcoming atmosphere and thoughtful organization. Team members regularly greeted EHS staff, and those responsible for submitting waste would go out of their way to assist in locating items, even in the lab’s limited space. - Dr. Cox’s Lab (VPRB, Room B015)
This lab consistently demonstrated best practices in waste submission and labeling, with issues being rare and easily addressed. The space was always clean, organized and the team friendly and communicative during visits. - Dr. Granger’s Lab (Hampton, Room 3165)
Known for exceptional cleanliness, Dr. Granger’s students maintain a pristine lab space that reflects their attention to detail and commitment to safety. - Dr. Hebner’s Research Group (FRNY 2182)
The lab was recognized for its exceptional organization, consistent compliance and safety of those handling the hazardous waste generated in their lab.
To celebrate the recognition, each lab receives a certificate and a small treat — typically cookies or pizza — delivered by EHS as a personal thank-you for their outstanding efforts.
This program reinforces that safety is a team effort, and when research teams and EHS collaborate with respect and diligence, everyone benefits. EHS plans to continue the recognition program in future semesters and encourages labs to strive for excellence in safety, compliance and camaraderie.
