How to Register for ENGL 620

Classroom Communication for International Graduate Students

ENGL 620 is open only to those international graduate students whose departments have identified as potential teaching assistants. Students must have taken the Oral English Proficiency Test and have received a score of 40 or 45 to be eligible for ENGL 620.

Instructions

Departments must identify the students in their area who have taken the OEPT and have the greatest need to be enrolled in ENGL 620, as the course fills quickly. Students cannot be signed up for the class until they take the OEPT.  Students who are expected to teach within the next year, should be given priority, especially for the fall semester. Students with other sources of funding or who are not immediately needed to teach may need to wait until spring or summer to take the class. Please keep in mind that some students may need more than one semester to be certified by the class.

Once priority students for the class have been identified by the department, the departmental liaison should work with these students to select 2 or 3 sections of ENGL 620 that are appropriate for their OEPT score level and will work with their schedule. Because class size is small, sections fill quickly and students may not always get their first choice of class times.

The student's department liaison should then notify the OEPP Program Coordinator of their students who need to be registered for the course, and the students’ top choices of class times.  You can find the ENGL 620 request form here.

Within one or two days the OEPP will either enter an override for one of the student's choices or suggest alternative class times. After the override code has been entered, the student must register for the course through myPurdue. Please contact the OEPP at oepp@purdue.edu if assistance is needed with registration.

In no case should the student's department enter override codes for registration in ENGL 620.
