Cloudy science, clear insights: Atmospheric scientist studies clouds’ causes and effects
Every cloud is lined, not with silver, but with science — at least from cloud expert Alexandria Johnson’s point of view. Studying them is akin to studying the blood and arteries of the planet itself. Johnson, an atmospheric scientist and assistant professor in Purdue University’s College of Science, studies clouds wherever they are: in her lab, on Earth, throughout the solar system and into the galaxy.Media contact: Brittany Steff, bsteff@purdue.edu
Purdue-invented concrete strength sensing system finalist for Edison Award
A Purdue University invention that could help reduce time and money spent on the construction and repair of concrete highway pavement and other structures has been selected as a finalist for an Edison Award in the Critical Human Infrastructure category. The Edison Awards, considered the “Oscars of innovation,” are given annually to “recognize the persistence and excellence that also characterized Thomas Edison’s work.” The Purdue invention will receive a gold, silver or bronze award April 18 at the 2024 Edison Awards in Fort Myers, Florida.Media contact: Kayla Albert, wiles5@purdue.edu

Xiaotao Yang, an assistant professor of seismology in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at Purdue University, explains how big a 4.8 magnitude earthquake is and the importance of earthquake early warning systems. While it is currently hard to tell, Yang does not expect to see another earthquake much larger than 4.8 in the area. Survey tallies consumer attitudes toward lab-grown meat alternatives
Many consumers view conventional meats as both tastier and healthier than laboratory-grown alternatives, according to the March Consumer Food Insights Report. The survey-based report out of Purdue University’s Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability assesses food spending, consumer satisfaction and values, support of agricultural and food policies, and trust in information sources.
