Purdue ALERT test set for Tuesday (Oct. 26)

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University will test two layers of the Purdue ALERT emergency notification system at 7 a.m. on Tuesday (Oct. 26). Only the in-classroom beacons and the connected desktop popup layers will be impacted.

Those two layers have been recently updated, said Jefferson Howells, director of Emergency Preparedness. The test is to confirm the update, he said. The Alertus Beacon and desktop popup alert on Tuesday morning will state:

“This is a TEST of the Purdue emergency warning notification system. This test simulates a level 1 incident. No action is necessary. This is a TEST”

Purdue routinely tests the Purdue ALERT emergency notification system during both fall and spring semesters, and conducted its most recent test of all layers in September. The multilayered emergency notification system consists of campuswide email, text messaging, Twitter, information posted to the Campus Status page, all hazards outdoor sirens, beacons installed in large classrooms, desktop popup alerts on most classroom and lab computers, over 300 digital signs, and the Boiler TV emergency alert system. All or some of the layers may be used during an actual emergency, depending upon the situation.

Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to sign up for emergency text alerts. Others may follow @purdueemergency on Twitter to receive emergency notifications. Additionally, please review your specific Building Emergency Plan and the Emergency Procedures Guide to stay informed on Purdue’s emergency, evacuation, and shelter procedures. These documents, and more, can be found on the Emergency Preparedness website.
