Appointments, honors and activities

Appointments and promotions:

- The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine has selected Dr. Ellen Lowery, a veterinarian on the faculty of Kansas State University, as the new director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Dean Willie Reed of Purdue Veterinary Medicine announced the appointment, which is effective Feb. 1. - Dr. Riyi Shi, professor of neuroscience in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, was appointed as the new director of the Center for Paralysis Research in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The appointment, which was announced by Dean Willie Reed, took effect Dec. 1. In addition to his role as a BMS faculty member, Shi holds a courtesy professorial appointment in Purdue University’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. Faculty and staff honors:

- Michael Jacovides, professor of philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts, received a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship. The $60,000 award will support Jacovides' project, titled “Springs and Principles of the Universe: David Hume on Laws and Causes,” which will consist of research and writing leading to a book on the development of philosopher David Hume’s theories of laws and causation. The National Humanities Alliance supported 188 humanities projects nationwide totaling $30.9 million in grants.

- T. Cole Jones, an assistant professor of history, has received the King’s College – London Georgian Papers Fellowship to conduct research at the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle. Also, Cole has recently published “Captives of Liberty: Prisoners of War and the Politics of Vengeance in the American Revolution.” Author James Kirby Martin wrote that the book “shines a brilliant new light” on the brutality of the Revolutionary War, adding that it “helps shatter longstanding images of a restrained, almost civilized military conflict. Beautifully written, Captives of Liberty is a magisterial work.”

- Chad Allred, clinical assistant professor in the Krannert School of Management, received an honorary doctorate from North-Chiang Mai University in Thailand for his efforts in global social entrepreneurship. Allred and Purdue students have traveled to Thailand for a number of projects, including implementing water purification systems and working with local artisans to build their businesses.
