Purdue Galleries to present National Tibetan Sacred Arts Tour Exhibition

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University Galleries’ Patti and Rusty Rueff Gallery East in Pao Hall will exhibit the National Tibetan Sacred Arts Tour Exhibition featuring a sand mandala construction in the gallery space. This traveling exhibition will open Sept. 9 and run through Sept. 13.

The Sacred Arts Tour of the monks of the Drepung Gomang Monastery, based in Tibet, will be visiting the Lafayette area from Sept. 2 through Sept. 15. As part of their visit, led by Venerable Tenzin Khyenrap, the monks will be creating a sacred sand painting in Patti and Rusty Rueff Gallery East. Gallery visitors will be able to watch as the Drepung Gomang monks create a sacred sand mandala in the gallery. The monks use the Sacred Arts Tour as a way to spread a message of peace, share the Tibetan Buddhist culture, and to raise funds for their monastery’s charitable work. Proceeds from the sale of crafts and jewelry at tour stops are used to support the monks and their surrounding community, including orphans and refugees.

The opening ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Sept. 8 in Patti and Rusty Rueff Gallery East, followed by a reception from 5:30-7 p.m. on Sept.12, and a formal deconstruction ceremony starting at Rueff gallery at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 13.  This exhibition will close at 6 p.m. Sept. 13.

The monks will also be leading meditations at Pao Hall at 8 a.m. Sept. 10; 10 a.m. Sept. 11; and 4:30 p.m. Sept. 13. They will be hosting a world peace ceremony at noon Sept. 11 at Pao Hall.

Donations to support the monks’ work and visit can be sent to Tashi Gomang Dharma Center, 411 North Hubbards Lane, Louisville, KY 40207.
