Purdue Black Cultural Center to host panel discussion on ‘Toxic Masculinity’

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue University Black Cultural Center will host a panel discussion on “Toxic Masculinity” at 7 p.m., Sept. 12, in Stewart Center’s Fowler Hall.

“Toxic Masculinity” will examine the ways the United States’ patriarchal culture informs sexual misconduct such as date rape, demeaning portrayals of women in pop culture, the gender pay gap, the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions and more. The 90-minute interactive town hall discussion will be moderated and have numerous panelists.

Panelists are:

  • Treva Lindsey, an associate professor and director of Undergraduate Studies of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at The Ohio State University.
  • Darnell L. Moore, an author of the recently released memoir “No Ashes in the Fire.” He is editor-at-large at CASSIUS, co-managing editor at The Feminist Wire, and is the writer-in- residence at the Center on African American Religion, Sexual Politics and Social Justice at Columbia University.
  • jessica Care moore, an internationally renowned poet, executive producer and founder of the rock and roll concert and empowerment weekend, Black WOMEN Rock!
  • Mark Anthony Neal, chair of African and African American Studies, professor of African and African American Studies and English, and founding director of the Center for Arts, Digital Culture and Entrepreneurship at Duke University.

The moderator is Jasiri X, who is the first independent hip-hop artist to be awarded an honorary doctorate (from Chicago Theological Seminary in 2016). He also co-founded the Pittsburgh-based anti-violence group 1Hood, as well as the New Media Academy, which teaches African American boys how to analyze and create media for themselves.

“The conversation is not about vilifying men; rather, it is an opportunity to construct a more positive model of masculinity that allows all individuals to feel secure in their own masculine identity,” said Renee Thomas, director of the Black Cultural Center.

This event is free and open to the public.
