Purdue and Simplilearn launch data science training program

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University through its Purdue Online initiative is teaming with Simplilearn, an international online training company, and IBM to offer a range of courses for professionals looking to jump start careers in the burgeoning field of data science.

Data science has multiple applications. Industries such as health care, e-commerce, and banking are already harnessing data and artificial intelligence to gain competitive advantage.

“With data playing a significant role in businesses and organizations around the world, there is an increasing demand for data scientists with industry-relevant skills,” said Gerry McCartney, executive vice president of Purdue Online. “We are happy to collaborate with a successful online training company like Simplilearn to provide professionals with the required competencies in a program that leverages Purdue’s internationally recognized educational expertise.”

The Postgraduate Program in Data Science will be offered in India and will equip aspiring data science professionals with skills ranging from programming languages like R and Python to machine learning and more. Program graduates will receive sought-after certifications in the field, along with Purdue University alumni status. IBM also is partnering on the effort.

Purdue Online was created in June 2018 by President Mitch Daniels and the board of trustees as part of the Online Education initiative of Purdue Moves. The goal is to systematically develop and grow a coordinated, unified systemwide portfolio of offerings from the physical campuses and from Purdue Global that serves all types of students.

Partnerships with businesses desiring to upgrade employee skills through existing or tailored programming, featuring measurable outcomes and backed by Purdue’s disciplinary and educational expertise, are one emphasis of Purdue Online.

Simplilearn is a global elearning provider of digital skills training. The collaboration with the company provides a comprehensive data science program leveraging Purdue’s academic excellence in data science; IBM’s content, tools and certification; and Simplilearn’s award-winning curriculum and blended learning approach.

Program participants will use a combination of self-paced videos and live virtual classes with significant hands-on exposure to ensure practical, industry-aligned learning. Class sizes also will be limited to foster maximum interaction.
