Purdue's Elliott Hall of Music to dedicate new hearing loop system

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Officials at Purdue University’s Edward C. Elliott Hall of Music on Sunday (Nov. 11) will dedicate a new hearing induction loop during a 2 p.m. event.

A hearing induction loop is a special type of audio system for use by people with hearing loss. The hearing loop generates a magnetic, wireless signal that is picked up by hearing aids or loop listener devices.

The loop system begins with the audio inputs from the venue’s audio system being routed into an induction loop amplifier that processes the signal and sends it to a series of wires embedded around the perimeter of a specific listening area.  As current flows through the wires, it creates a magnetic field that can be picked up by the telephone coil (T-coil) inside the hearing aids or loop listener devices and converted into high quality audio for the listener.

The Elliott system was design and installed by Assisted Hearing Systems, LLC (AHS) from Huntley, Illinois, and the installation is considered one of the largest fully loop systems in the world. While most loop systems consist of the wire running around the perimeter of the room, in a large venue such as Elliott there are multiple wires running throughout the building, creating multiple listening areas. Each loop area is then delayed, or time-aligned, to keep the sound coherent and in synchronization with the normal audio system.

The dedication ceremony will also include an informative presentation and discussion conducted by Steve Thunder, president of Assistive Hearing Systems LLC. The presentation will allow guests to learn more about the loop system and how they can use it to maximize their listening experience.

A small reception in the upper lobby will precede the dedication ceremony and all interested individuals are invited to attend.
