Science on Tap to discuss genetically modified organisms

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Peter Goldsbrough, a Purdue University professor of botany and plant pathology, will lead the next installment of Science on Tap, which will focus on genetically modified organisms.

The talk, titled “GMOs: Marvel or Malady?” will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 23) on the top floor of Lafayette Brewing Company, 622 Main St., Lafayette. The talk is free and open to anyone 21 and older.

Goldsbrough’s presentation will focus on the impact of genetically modified traits that are used in corn, soybeans and cotton, the potential applications for gene editing, and the importance of those technologies to meet the future demand for food.

Goldsbrough earned his bachelor's degree at Edinburgh University in Scotland and his doctorate at the University of East Anglia in England. He also did graduate work at the John Innes Institute in Norwich, England.

Science on Tap, led by graduate students Elizabeth Phillips, Matthew Pharris and Emma Lendy, provides Purdue faculty and collaborating researchers the opportunity to share research activities in an informal setting with presentations designed to appeal to a more general audience.
