Purdue Alert test set for Thursday (Sept. 27)

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University will test its emergency notification system, including sirens, at 10 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 27).

The test will be used to simulate a live situation for practice, said Ron Wright, Purdue Emergency Preparedness director. The test also meets U.S. Department of Education guidelines of at least one test each year. Purdue exceeds this by testing once each during the fall and spring semesters.

The alert system includes campus-wide emailing, text messaging, Twitter, information posted to the Campus Status page, All Hazards Outdoor Siren activation, Alertus beacons installed in large classrooms, desktop popup alerts on most classroom and lab computers, over 200 digital signs, and Boiler TV emergency alert system activation. The alert posted to the Campus Status page will state:

“This is the semi-annual TEST of the Purdue emergency warning notification system. This test simulates a level 1 incident. No action is necessary.

The 2018 Your Campus, Your Safety annual security report is now available. This report is required by federal law and contains policy statements and crime statistics for Purdue University.  The policy statements address the university’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security. Three years’ worth of statistics are included for certain types of crimes that were reported to have occurred on campus, in or on off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the university and on public property within or immediately adjacent to the campus. This report is available online at http://www.purdue.edu/ehps/police/reports/YourCampus.pdf.  You may also request a paper copy from the Purdue University Police Department.  If you have been identified as a Campus Security Authority, please visit http://www.purdue.edu/ethics/reporting/clery/index.html for more information and training.  Lastly, please review your specific Building Emergency Plan and the Emergency Procedures Guide to review emergency response and evacuation/shelter procedures. These documents can be found on the Emergency Preparedness website”

If there is inclement weather, the test will be postponed until Sept. 28 at 10am.  If there is still inclement weather on Sep 28, the siren test will be canceled but all other Purdue Alert layers will be activated.

For information on Purdue safety measures and procedures, go to the Purdue Emergency Preparedness (EP) Office website.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to sign up for emergency text alerts from Purdue and familiarize themselves with their Building Emergency Plan. All BEPs are now located on the Emergency Preparedness Office website. Everyone should take a few minutes and review their individual emergency response plans for possible evacuation and shelter scenarios. The emergency planning office continues to provide all hazards awareness training. To sign up for a class go to the EP Office website.
