INDY International Wine Competition announces winners

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Dakota Sun Gardens Winery was named Winery of the Year and a 2014 Malbec by Nodland Cellars won Wine of the Year in the INDY International Wine Competition.

Richard Batchelor of Maryhill Winery in Goldendale, Washington, was recognized as Winemaker of the Year and Hartland Winery, in Ashley, Indiana, won The Governor’s Cup, awarded to the best Indiana winery.

More than 1,700 wines were entered in the 27th annual competition, hosted in early June by the Purdue Wine Grape Team. Commercial vintners entered 1,500 wines and the remaining 200 came from amateur winemakers. Entries came from around the world, including Canada, Costa Rica, Italy and New Zealand. The wines, ciders and meads were evaluated by dozens of judges from across the country.

“The Indy International is one of the top international wine competitions in the world with the best wineries entering wines and the best wine professionals judging the event. We are so humbled to receive the award of ‘Wine of the Year’ for our 2014 Malbec out of all the great wines from around the world that were submitted,” said Tim Nodland, winemaker of Nodland Cellars.

The INDY International Wine Competition has been organized by the Purdue Wine Grape Team since 1992, making it the oldest and largest independent and scientifically organized wine judging in the country.
