WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Enhancing Purdue University’s visibility and growing reputation at home and around the world are the charges for Dan Hasler, who Wednesday (Sept. 5) was named Purdue’s executive vice president for communication.

“Dan has helped lead our research foundation with great success over the past five-plus years, revolutionizing entrepreneurship at Purdue and leading us to a position of literal world leadership in patents, licenses and startup companies,” said Purdue President Mitch Daniels. “With a career in national and global marketing, Dan is uniquely positioned to ensure that the great work of the people of Purdue is known and appreciated worldwide, and we are really fortunate for his willingness to take on this new assignment.”

As executive vice president for communication, Hasler will be the chief brand marketer for the institution, overseeing marketing strategy, strategic communications, media relations, advertising, licensing, and digital marketing in collaboration with colleges and units across the Purdue system.

In addition, he will continue to lead Purdue’s yearlong 150th anniversary celebration, “Giant Leaps,” which officially kicks off in late September during Homecoming 2018 with the yearlong goal of examining some of the world’s most pressing challenges and opportunities through campus-wide, multidisciplinary, cross-cultural debates and inquiry.

“I can’t wait to build on Purdue’s already stellar reputation as a center for intellectual discourse,” Hasler said. “We want to ensure that the world knows that Purdue University is where you come to make giant leaps in learning, innovation and finding sound research-based solutions to challenges of all types.”

Hasler joined the Purdue Research Foundation in 2013, serving as its president and chief entrepreneurial officer through 2017, and continuing as chief entrepreneurial officer until this new appointment. Over the past five years, under his leadership, Purdue has reached record numbers of patents, licenses and technology commercialization based on ever-expanding Purdue research.

Previously, Hasler served as the secretary of commerce for the state of Indiana and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. His 32-year career at Eli Lilly and Co. included serving as vice president for global marketing, where he was responsible for the commercial strategy and market performance of Lilly’s worldwide portfolio. He also was chief marketing officer for Eli Lilly USA, led the commercial operations of Eli Lilly’s largest European group and was general manager and president of Eli Lilly of Brazil.

Hasler is a graduate of DePauw University and has a Master of Business Administration degree from Duke University.
