Appointments, honors and activities

Faculty and staff honors:

- Pamela Karagory has been selected to participate in 2018 Leadership for Academic Nursing Program. Karagory will join 48 other nursing faculty from around the country July 29-Aug. 2 in Chaska, Minnesota, and will take part on a yearlong fellowship meant to enhance executive leadership skills and build a peer network to foster long-term support. She is a clinical associate professor and interim head of the Purdue School of Nursing.  

- Ellen Kossek, Krannert School of Management’s Basil S. Turner Professor of Management, was recently named a 2018 Top Ten Extraordinary Contributor to Work and Family Research at the annual Conference of Work and Family Researchers Network in Washington, D.C. The honor recognizes Kossek’s research, publishing, landmark contributions to the field and mentorship of future scholars, among other criteria.  

- March of Dimes has announced that Andrea DeMaria, an assistant professor in the Department of Consumer Science and Public Health Graduate Program, will join 19 other women in the inaugural cohort of the organization’s MOMentum Gretchen Carlson Advocacy Fellowship. Fellows will receive media and storytelling training to shape public discourse around maternal and child health and advocacy. The fellowship begins with a series of workshops on grassroots organizing and meetings in Washington, D.C., with key legislators and staff. Fellows will engage in yearlong trainings, monthly networking events and local and national advocacy.  

Notables:

- Purdue University Galleries has completed the Museum Assessment Program, a grant-funded review by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the American Alliance of Museums. Having received the visiting team’s final report, Galleries is beginning steps in prioritizing and implementing recommendations. - Purdue's annual Dawn or Doom conference on emerging technologies was the winner of one of the top awards in the 30th Annual Apex Awards for Publication Excellence. The awards are presented by Communications Concepts Inc., an international best practices organization for publishing, public relations and marketing professionals. The judges evaluated 1,408 entries from throughout the U.S. as well as London, Singapore and Canada, among other places. Dawn or Doom, sponsored by the Office of the Executive Vice President for Information Technology, won a Grand award in the category Campaigns, Programs and Plans. Just 100 Grand awards were presented in 2018 spanning a dozen categories. The awards are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and overall communications quality. Dawn or Doom was created to explore the effects of rapidly emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and genetic engineering, by bringing together leading national experts and stars from Purdue’s large constellation of researchers to kick-start conversations about potential risks and rewards. Free and open to the public, Dawn or Doom drew 6,000 participants in 2017. The 2018 Dawn or Doom conference is scheduled for Nov. 5-6.

Alumni honors:

- James Pula, a professor of history at Purdue Northwest and alumnus of Purdue, recently had his book “Under the Crescent Moon with the XI Corps in the Civil War, Volume 2: From Gettysburg to Victory, 1863-1865,” released.  The book offers seven chapters on the XI Corps at Gettysburg, followed by a rich exploration of the corps’ participation in the war. The book follows their experiences after the group is broken up into two divisions. More information can be found here.

Rankings:

- Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management has two of the top 50 executive master of business administration (EMBA) programs in the world, according to the The Economist’s Which MBA? 2018 ranking. Krannert is one of only four schools to have multiple programs featured on the list. The Purdue EMBA program is ranked No. 47 in the world, and the Purdue International Master’s in Management (IMM) Global EMBA program is No. 42, up from No. 51 in the publication’s previous ranking in 2015. Krannert’s programs scored highest at gender balance (No. 3, IMM program); percentage increase on pre-EMBA salary after two years (No. 11, IMM program); and managerial work experience (No. 17, Purdue EMBA).
