CERIAS to celebrate its 20th anniversary

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The director of the Cyber Security Operations Center at the National Reconnaissance Office, and the vice president and chief privacy officer at Cisco Systems Inc. will be among a list of speakers at Purdue University’s Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security’s 19th annual Information Security Symposium on Tuesday and Wednesday (April 3-4).

Starting at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, the symposium will bring together researchers, practitioners and program managers from academia, government and commercial industry to discuss research, education and policy in information assurance, cyber-physical security, resiliency, privacy and cybercrime.  The event’s agenda is designed to trace the evolution of cybersecurity, while examining the current state and emerging needs for cybersecurity research and education in the U.S.

The event will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of CERIAS, the oldest interdisciplinary academic cybersecurity research institute in the world. CERIAS was cited as the top cybersecurity program in the United States in September 2017 by Degree Prospects, a Washington, D.C.-based publisher of informational websites in higher education. More than 50 of Purdue’s current cyber or cyber-physical research projects will be highlighted.

The featured speakers will include:

* Mark Spangler, director of the Cyber Security Operations Center at the National Reconnaissance Office.

* Josh Corman, senior vice president and chief security officer at PTC.

* Mark Weatherford, senior vice president and chief cybersecurity strategist at vArmour, and the first deputy under secretary for cybersecurity at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (2011-13).

* Eugene Spafford, executive director emeritus of CERIAS and a computer science professor at Purdue. Spafford was a cybersecurity adviser to three past U.S. presidents.

* Michelle Dennedy, vice president and chief privacy officer at Cisco.

* Melissa Dark, the W.C. Furnas professor of technology in computer and information technology at Purdue.

Students, faculty and staff from academic institutions can register for free.
