Tuesday (Sept. 26) event to focus campus community on safety awareness

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In conjunction with September’s National Preparedness Month, Purdue University will host an event Tuesday (Sept. 26) to promote safety awareness on campus.

Purdue’s seventh annual safety day is scheduled for 1:30-3:30 p.m. around the circle drive on the west side of the France A. Córdova Recreational Sports Center. The event is aimed at educating students and the rest of the university community on the resources available to them, both on campus and in Greater Lafayette. If there is inclement weather, the event will be canceled.

“Hoping that they never need them, our goal is to make students and the rest of the campus community aware of the many situational resources available to them,” said Jefferson Howells, assistant director of Purdue emergency preparedness. “We also want students to think now about safety measures they can take on their own – everything from never walking alone at night, securing personal belongings and fire prevention.”

Informational booths and attractions by Purdue agencies and organizations include:

  • Purdue Police Department – Safe Walk, police K-9 demonstrations.
  • Purdue Fire Department – a command vehicle, firetruck, and advanced life support ambulance will be on site.
  • Purdue Radiological and Environmental Management Department – an informational display.
  • Purdue Emergency Preparedness Office – an informational display.
  • Purdue Residence Halls – an informational display.

Agencies and organizations from the Greater Lafayette community that will participate include:

  • Tippecanoe County Health Department – an informational display.
  • Tippecanoe County Sherriff’s Department EOD Team.
  • Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officer – boating safety.
  • Tippecanoe County Emergency Management Agency – mobile operations center vehicle.

National Preparedness Month is intended to prompt people to take action now, before a potentially dangerous situation occurs, to stay safe and communicate. The month ends Saturday (Sept. 30) with National PrepareAthon Day
