WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Following the lead set by aviator Amelia Earhart at Purdue in the 1930s, Purdue University is announcing the new Amelia Earhart Faculty-in-Residence program.

Invited to join Purdue in 1934 by then-President Edward Elliott, Earhart chose to live among the students in the Women’s Residence Hall. Now, 80 years later, Purdue faculty are getting the same opportunity to mentor current Boilermakers.

“We wanted to recreate the impact Amelia Earhart had on the women of Windsor through her presence and mentorship,” said Carl Krieger, director of residential life. “She embraced the possibilities inherent in the personal connections she could create by residing in a living and learning environment. We know that there are faculty here at Purdue who will want to continue her legacy.”

The faculty-in-residence will be free to determine how to fulfill their responsibilities - they may greet families during move-in or join students in the recreation center and dining court - but the overall goal is to provide mentorship and foster personal relationships and intellectual growth.

Faculty in the program are required to make a two-year commitment and will be given a furnished apartment, including utilities, cable, phone and Ethernet. A 20-meal plan to university dining courts is included, as is a parking pass. Family members are expected to live with the FiR, and pets are welcome too.

“Having a faculty-in-residence is a proven and impactful way to emphasize the reality that learning does not begin and end solely in the classroom,” says Jim Pukrop, associate director, Residential Academic Initiatives. “A faculty presence in a residential community reinforces, through planned programs and serendipitous encounters, learning and connection as constant and vital processes that benefit individuals and communities as a whole.”

The Amelia Earhart Faculty-in-Residence program begins in fall semester 2017 with one position available in Vawter Hall of Windsor Residential Community. The deadline to apply is March 31. Further information on how to apply can be found here
