Large-classroom beacons, desktop layers of Purdue Alert to be retested

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University emergency preparedness officials will retest the classroom beacons and desktop popup layers of the Purdue Alert system at 10:20 a.m. Friday (Jan. 27).

Installed in most large classrooms (over 100 seats), the beacons sound for 10 seconds and flash for five minutes with text of the alert being issued. More than 30,000 computers on campus also may receive a desktop popup alert.

The alert will state: “This is a test of the Desktop Popup Alert and classroom beacons. This is only a test. No action is necessary.”

The beacons and desktop popups are two of the various layers of the Purdue Alert system to make the campus community aware of an emergency situation. The alert system also includes campus-wide emailing, text messaging, Twitter, information posted to the Campus Status page, All Hazards Outdoor Siren activation, approximately 185 digital signs, and Boiler TV emergency alert system activation.

The entire system was tested on Jan. 19, and some issues arose with the beacons and popups.

“We want to make sure those issues are resolved,” said Ron Wright, Purdue’s emergency preparedness director.
