WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University and the Core Foundation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore opportunities to provide food solutions and economic innovations to help communities in poverty, especially Latin America.

The two-year agreement, which was signed Nov. 5, runs through 2018.

“Many countries in Latin America, such as Peru, face difficult environmental and technology issues,” said Tomás Díaz de la Rubia, chief scientist and executive director of Purdue's Discovery Park. “Through this agreement with the Core Foundation, we hope to help bring to Peru some of Purdue’s most innovative ideas and faculty expertise to help solve environmental issues such as water quality, and share best practices for technology innovation and commercialization.”

Core Foundation, a part of the Purdue Technology Center, seeks solutions for food security, environmental protections, protection for important native animals, and economic development in Latin America.

“This Memorandum of Understanding with Discovery Park will open the doors to different technological projects that will bring economic development to the people of Peru and from there to Latin America. At the same time we are thinking of Indiana, we want to see Indiana technology and advances being used in Peru,” said Ricardo Torreblanca, president and CEO of Core Foundation.

“Latin America is in great need of innovation in many areas, especially ag-technology. Indiana and the United States have that technology; it is a win-win. Core Foundation is working with universities, private companies and local governments to find real solutions to real and urgent problems. We are proud to have the help of great institutions like Discovery Park, which has great technology, and businesses and individuals that want to help with their donations. If you want to help, donate to our website http://www.coreworld.org.”

The Purdue-Core agreement lists seven areas of potential cooperation: research and development projects, cooperation in continuing education, joint curriculum development, climate change, food security, water pollution and cultivation of livestock.
