Registration underway for Purdue's Girls in Aviation Day

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —An exhibit on Amelia Earhart, Purdue University's most famous female pilot, is among the activities at an event by the campus chapter of Women in Aviation.

Girls in Aviation Day happens 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at Purdue University Airport. It is open to third- through eighth-grade girls throughout Indiana.

Registration for the event is $25 and continues through Sept. 20. Agenda information and registration details are available online. Registration includes a T-shirt and lunch will be provided.

Abbie Ijams, an aviation technology graduate student and president of the local chapter, said the event is to teach young girls about aviation and all the possibilities within the industry. It is the first year for the event.

"The Purdue Chapter of Women in Aviation is excited to host the first Girls in Aviation Day," she said. “The purpose of the event is to foster an interest in aviation among young girls and to inspire the next generation of women to pursue careers in aviation."

The event is part of an effort by Women in Aviation chapters around the world to offer similar opportunities.

There will be several STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities at the event, such as an aircraft display, seminars taught by women aviation professionals, the Earhart history exhibit and aviation crafts.

Three activity sessions will be held for participants during the day.
