Sears Lecture Series to present March 3 lecture by Dara Cohen

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Sears Lecture Series and the Purdue Department of Political Science will present "What explains wartime rape? Evidence from recent civil wars," with Dara Cohen at 8 p.m. March 3 in Krannert, Room G016. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Cohen is an assistant professor of public policy at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Her work provides timely and interesting insights into international security, civil war, gender and conflict.

In her forthcoming book "Rape During Civil War," Cohen addresses the issue of the use of rape during recent civil conflicts. Her award-winning work has appeared in journals, such as the American Political  Science Review, World Politics, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Peace Research, International Security, and the Stanford Law Review.

Her research has been funded through the National Science Foundation, the United States Institute of Peace, Folke Bernadotte Academy and the Peace Research Institute Oslo.

The Sears Lecture Series is named for the late Purdue historian Louis Martin Sears, who was a faculty member in the then-joint Department of History and Political Science from 1920 until his retirement in 1956. Sears specialized in diplomatic history and biography and was the author of numerous books. Purdue's history and political science departments alternately produce the series bearing his name, in conjunction with Purdue Convocations
