WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University introduced an updated model of its West Lafayette campus Monday (Feb. 15). The latest version showcases new buildings and the current campus landscape.

The scale model is on permanent display in the Great Hall of Purdue Memorial Union due to its central location, public access and serving as the starting point on campus tours for thousands of prospective students each year. Originally constructed in 1957, the model is updated to reflect changes to campus over time. New updates include, but are not limited to, the Drug Discovery Facility, Lyles-Porter Hall, Wilmeth Active Learning Center and the Honors College and Residences.

“The architectural model is a beloved piece of campus history. Students and PMU visitors take time to marvel at the detailing,” said Terry Clayton, assistant director, facilities, in the Memorial Union.

Indianapolis-based CSO Architects is sponsoring updates for the model in the union from 2016-2021. The updates were completed by an external firm under the direction of Physical Facilities.

“Purdue University is a source of pride for our entire state, and we are pleased to be able to feature the three-dimensional product of so many outstanding Hoosier architectural and engineering professionals in such a prominent way,” said Alan Tucker, president of CSO Architects.

The scale model (1 inch = 100 feet) includes a plywood base with campus buildings crafted from wood and foam. Purdue’s landscape features were formed using green flocking. Architects hand-carved campus landmarks and created facades using custom archival decals.
