Symposium on aging to focus on functional ability in place

Purdue's Center on Aging and the Life Course will conduct a symposium on "Optimizing Functional Ability in Later Life" on Oct. 2, featuring talks on mobility and environmental fit.
The symposium will be at 8 a.m. to noon in Lawson Computer Science Building, Room 1142. It is co-sponsored by the Purdue University Retirees Association and the School of Nursing. Though the event is free and open to the public, registration is required. The schedule and principal speakers are:
8 a.m.: Poster session and continental breakfast (concludes at 8:50 a.m.)
9 a.m.: Welcoming remarks
9:10 a.m.: "Optimal Mobility in Later Life: Why Place Matters" by William Satariano, professor of epidemiology and community health and the Berkeley Endowed Chair in Geriatrics at the University of California, Berkeley. Also a Purdue PhD alumnus.
10:10 a.m.: Break
10:30 a.m.: "Supporting Older Adults' Functional Goals through Person-Environment Fit: The CAPABLE Studies" by Sarah L. Szanton, associate professor and director of the PhD Program in the Department of Community-Public Health, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.
11:30 a.m.: Award presentation and closing remarks
Noon: Conclusion
Satariano has been a member of the National Advisory Committee for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Active for Life program, a national, community-based program to enhance physical activity in older populations. He is the author of scores of peer-reviewed journal articles and a book, "The Epidemiology of Aging: An Ecological Approach."
Szanton is a core member of the Johns Hopkins Center on Aging and Health. Her research focuses on aging in place and racial and socioeconomic health disparities. She is leading a randomized controlled trial of nurse, occupational therapist and handyman services to reduce disability among older adults.
