September 'Lunch and Learn' workshop to focus on breast cancer
September 11, 2015
The Center for Healthy Living is offering a special Lunch and Learn workshop focused on breast cancer.
The workshop will take place from noon to 12:50 p.m. Sept. 24 at Stewart Center, Room 278.
As a lead into Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which runs Oct. 1 through Oct. 31, Dr. Carolyn Cooper, medical director at the Center for Healthy Living, and special guests from Indiana University Health Arnett -- Dr. Serene Shereef and Phyllis Martin-Simmerman -- will discuss the risk factors for breast cancer and the importance of regular screenings. This talk will also present topics on breast imaging, timing and need for a diagnostic mammogram as well as BRCA 1 and 2 testing for early detection of hereditary breast cancer.
“Mammograms are an important tool in the early detection of breast cancer,” Cooper says. “In the past few years there have been a lot of changes in the recommendations for breast cancer screening. We are hoping to clear up some of the confusion in this workshop. We are fortunate to have two excellent physicians joining the discussion to answer your questions about newer testing such as breast MRI and genetic testing.”
Registration is requested by Sept. 23 by calling 49-45239. Limited seating is available.
Center for Healthy Living workshops are offered at no cost to benefits-eligible faculty and staff and for spouses/same-sex domestic partners covered on a Purdue medical plan.
