For the first time in two years, freshly designed banners will hang from the light posts along West Lafayette campus streets. As fall semester nears, the 172 new banners will eventually celebrate key Purdue areas of leadership and innovation.

The six designs of the new banners highlight the major tenets of Purdue Moves: STEM Leadership, Transformative Education, World-Changing Research, and Affordability & Accessibility. The switch began Friday (Aug. 7) along Harrison and State streets and will continue during the next few weeks, leading up to when Purdue's fall semester begins on Aug. 24.

"These banners serve as a lively, visual reminder of what Purdue is about to our community and visitors," says Julie Griffith, Purdue vice president for public affairs. "It is important that the banners reflect our current goals and initiatives, and these new banners do just that."

The Purdue Moves focus, under the leadership of President Mitch Daniels, provides the entire theme of these 30-by-78-inch banners. Unlike previous banners with large photographs, the new ones display only text. They make use of the University color palette as well as the traditional gold and black in a way intended to let the Purdue Moves message stand out.

Designed as a scrolling text, much like one would find when scrolling on the Internet, each banner contains a list of the Purdue Moves and showcases one particular initiative. Once these banners taken down, the University plans to recycle the material banners into merchandise such as tote bags.

This straightforward approach announces what Purdue represents and where the land-grant university is going, evidenced by the Purdue Moves tagline, "Higher education at the highest proven value," says Mark Craft, assistant vice president for marketing.

The banners are made from two pieces of 13-ounce scrim vinyl sewn back-to-back for durability. They were designed and developed by Purdue Marketing and Media and installed by crews from Physical Facilities.

"We want these banners to be a simple way to unite campus and effectively communicate the University's personality," Craft says. "A return to our colors and a focus on Purdue Moves does just that."
