The Presidential Lecture Series is bringing Frank Bruni, New York Times columnist and best-selling author, with thoughts related to his most recent book, "Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania." A Piano Dedication Recital with Sean Chen & Eric Zuber promises to be a truly grand occasion for Purdue Convocations and concert piano lovers, celebrating the University's new Steinway D. 8 p.m. STEW, Loeb Playhouse. $. Details

The home football season opens against Indiana State on Military Appreciation Day/Band Day. The "All-American" Marching Band will lead in the music making, and all the attendant activities for gameday fun will be buzzing. Events start at 9 a.m.; game at noon. $. Details

* Volleyball (women's). The four-team Boiler Box Challenge starts Friday and builds to a Saturday night showdown with Notre Dame in Mackey Arena. Last time was raucous. This time? Volleyball
* Soccer (women's). It's Big Ten time: Northwestern at 7 p.m. Friday, then Illinois at 1 p.m. Sunday. Soccer
* Football. Virginia Tech is coming in on Family Day, but the Hokies should expect a feud. The game is at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Lots of music and fan stuff too starting at 12:30 p.m. Football

The occasional "Unearthing Our Roots of Racism" Film Series featuring candid reflections and discussions will open with "Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequity." Presented by the Black Cultural Center. 6-8 p.m. Krannert Auditorium. Details

"Dawn or Doom2: The New Technology Explosion." Last year's inaugural summit established this summit as a profound, highly informative event grappling with fundamental issues of technology and civilization. Details

"Betty's Diner, The Musical," with music and lyrics by Carrie Newcomer, tells of a stranger's arrival at a diner struggling to keep the doors open. This production opens Purdue Theatre's season. $. Details
