Panelists from all campuses discuss student assessment at Purdue

January 23, 2015

Administrators and faculty members from all Purdue campuses gathered at Purdue North Central earlier this month to discuss student assessment efforts and possible ways to improve them across the Purdue system.

For the past seven years, Purdue North Central has held discussions about assessment efforts on that campus, but this month's event was the first time representatives from all campuses have discussed assessment at a system-wide level. Held on Jan. 8, the discussion took the form of a panel.

 Panelists were:

* Diane Beaudoin, director of assessment in the Office of the Provost at the West Lafayette campus.
* Anne Edwards, head and associate professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at Purdue Calumet.
* Kent Johnson, director of assessment at IPFW.
* Beth Pellicciotti, assistant vice chancellor for academic quality programs at Purdue Calumet.
* Laura Starr, associate director of experiential learning and student success in the College of Science on the West Lafayette campus.
* Jeffrey Xavier Watt, associate chair and associate professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at IUPUI.

In the audience, Carla Pfeffer, assistant professor of sociology, provided insights from the Purdue North Central campus.

The representatives discussed different assessment methods practiced across disciplines and campuses and shared best practices, according to the Purdue North Central Assessment Steering Committee, which organized the discussion.

Topics included the need to improve assessment in programs that lack outside accreditation, the planned use of standardized testing for critical thinking for first-year students at the West Lafayette campus beginning in the fall and the importance of peer review among faculty who develop assessment methods.

The discussion gave the panelists and attendees the opportunity to learn how others across the Purdue system are solving problems they also face.

Further, the discussion allowed the establishment of direct contact among assessment leaders from all Purdue campuses, forming a basis for the continued exchange of best practices and the development of new insights and strategies, according to the Purdue North Central Assessment Steering Committee.
