Howard Dean, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and Michael Steele, former chairman of the Republican National Committee, participate in a debate, "Face Off: Washington Comes to West Lafayette," on Thursday (Nov. 20) in Purdue Memorial Union's North Ballroom.
Steve Scully, political editor at C-SPAN, moderated the debate. The event was organized by the Purdue Institute for Civic Communication, a nonpartisan, University-wide initiative in experiential and applied learning. Through classes and in forums planned and produced by students, the institute brings real-world communication and policy leaders together with students.
Dean was a presidential candidate in the 2004 campaign, a former member of the Vermont House of Representatives and governor of Vermont from 1991 to 2003. He also served as 50th chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 2005-09.
Steele was the seventh lieutenant governor of Maryland from 2003 to 2007 and the 64th chairman of the Republican National Committee in 2009-11. Currently he serves as a political analyst for MSNBC.
Scully is political editor and a senior executive producer for C-SPAN and a host of its show "Washington Journal." He served as the 2006-07 president of the White House Correspondents Association.
