President Mitch Daniels reflected on his experiences as a leader and reformer during a session titled "Cross-Industry Leadership: A Case Study Comes to Life" as part of Chicago Ideas Week.
Chicago Ideas Week, which runs Oct. 13-19, brings together more than 150 globally renowned thought leaders to share their experience and expertise. Some of the diverse speakers taking the CIW stage this year include actress Joan Cusack, three-time UFC Champion Rich Franklin, "Meet the Press" moderator David Gregory, country music star Naomi Judd, journalist Nicholas Kristof, entrepreneur Peter Thiel and immigration rights activist Jose Antonio Vargas.
During the interactive conversation on Tuesday (Oct. 14), Daniels and Robert Kaplan, a senior associate dean and professor at the Harvard Business School, discussed Kaplan's Harvard Business Review case study "Mitch Daniels and the State of Indiana."
Daniels' session earned attention on Twitter. A tweet and photo from ArcelorMittal USA (@ArcelorMittalUS), a steel and mining company, showed how Daniels' "leadership insights [were] brought to life by Ink Factory."
Another Twitter user, Liz O'Connor (@LizOConnor1) from Chicago, tweeted a quote from Daniels: "Leadership is rarely about individual achievements. It's about motivating and inspiring others."
Leading up to the Chicago Ideas Week session, Daniels answered questions on Purdue's tuition freeze and the national debt on the "Bruce Wolf and Dan Proft" show on WLS-AM 890.
