Host families needed for Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellows

May 27, 2014

The College of Education is looking for families to host participants in the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellows (BFTF) Summer Institute at Purdue for 10 days in July.

Top high school-aged scholars from the United States and Europe will be at the West Lafayette campus June 28-July 26 for the summer institute, hosted by the College of Education's Department of Curriculum and Instruction. The 45 students will take classes on campus or engage in community service as well as participate in social and cultural events.

One of the highlight experiences provided by the institute is the homestay, in which the students live with a Hoosier family for 10 days (July 12-21). Hosting families are responsible for providing hospitality and room and board, and to transport the exchange student to the Purdue campus in the morning and pick him or her up around 5 p.m. If transportation is a problem, the program can offer assistance.

Families who participated last year agree that this is a special group of young people.

"We've had several different exchange experiences, and this one was by far the best. We really made a great connection with these two boys, and now they feel like family. BFTF did a good job preparing us," one host says.

For more information, contact Anatoli Rapoport, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, at rapoport@purdue.edu, or Sarah Powley, homestay coordinator, at spowley@purdue.edu or 463-1648.

BFTF is a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs created to build relations between future leaders.
