Dreamer Award, diversity speaker to be featured at event today

June 12, 2014

The leadoff event today (June 12) in a series about civil rights and higher education, presented by the Diversity Resource Office, will honor Purdue's 2014 Dreamer Award recipients and hear from Wanda Mitchell, a professor/administrator from Virginia, at "A Conversation in Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964."

The "Conversation" will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 214. Those gathered will honor this year's Dreamer Award winners, whose recognition event this winter was postponed due to weather. They are Christopher Martin, director of business managers, and David Rollock, associate professor of psychological sciences. The annual Dreamer Award honors contributions to Purdue that embody Rev. Martin Luther King's vision of service and the University's commitment to diversity.

This kickoff of the series "Civil Rights and Higher Education: Then & Now" also will feature an interactive presentation by Mitchell, vice president for inclusive excellence and chief diversity officer at Virginia Commonwealth University. Mitchell provides leadership for her campus and community on diversity initiatives fostering inclusion, equity and success.

Her research and teaching interests are in counseling of diverse populations, higher education excellence, women's leadership and career development. She has served professionally in a number of national associations.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information or to register, go to http://tinyurl.com/m8xt55d.
